A TEAM from Siena Catholic College, Sippy Downs, is off to America to represent Australia in the Future Problem Solving (FPS) Competition.

The college took part in the Queensland FPS competition with two teams selected for the National Finals in Melbourne.

A Year 9 and a Year 10 team (each of five students) contested the intermediate section of the nationals with the Year 10 team placed third overall.

The five Year 10 students were invited to travel to the USA in June 2011 to compete at the international finals being held at the University of Wisconsin.

FPS is an extension program for students that promoted the use of teamwork and creative problem solving skills for tomorrow’s workforce.

Teams are given a scenario 60 years into the future that involved real global issues.

Using a six-step process, teams brainstorm possible solutions to the issue.

For this year’s national finals it was centred around a global food crisis that required students to look at the political, economic, social, ethical, agricultural, scientific implications in creating solutions.

Siena’s Learning Enrichment coordinator Julie Bolton said the team was ecstatic with the well-deserved result.

Under her guidance over the past nine months the students had practiced and worked out their solutions to the problems they were given.

“Their dedication has been well rewarded,” she said.

Team member Grace Johnson said she was delighted with the win and even more excited at the opportunity to attend the international finals.

She said the support from fellow students, staff members and Mrs Bolton in particular has been fantastic, as was the school’s P&F, who contributed to the costs of their going to Melbourne and will again for the trip to the USA.
