Library award goes to Assisi

Assisi teacher-librarian Maureen Twomey accepts the award from Brian
Bahnisch on behalf of the college

ASSISI Catholic College’s library is a winner and they a School Library Association of Queensland (SLAQ) award to prove it.

The Upper Coomera college took out the prestigious Brian Bahnisch Award for its Dimensions of Learning (DOL) project at the SLAQ/IASL conference awards presentation.

Brian Bahnisch presented the biennial award, which recognises and encourages collaborations and partnerships involving teacher-librarians, teachers and members of the school community, to teacher-librarian Maureen Twomey, who accepted it on behalf of the college.

In announcing the award, SLAQ president Chris Kahl said the college’s application clearly articulated the innovative manner in which the teacher-librarian, in collaboration with other members of the school community, developed and implemented a project that had positive implications for student learning outcomes.

She said the awards committee commended the work of Mrs Twomey, head of Campus, Matthew Edwards and the Careers and Senior Years teacher, Jane Fox on the comprehensive and collaborative implementation of the DOL project.

“The significant support for the value of the program is clearly evident in the testimonials offered by school leaders and teachers across curriculum areas and from students using the student manual to support their learning,” she said.

Maureen said the DOL project had been, and continued to be, the college’s major focus “as we work towards our goal to improve student learning”.

“We have the advantage of being a new college in the Brisbane Catholic Education system and have been able to embed DOL as our learning and teaching framework,” she said.

“I have been very fortunate to be working with a wonderful team led by our Principal Dora Luxton, who not only believes in the power of school libraries in making a difference to student learning, but who has empowered me to work in new and innovative ways in developing a future role as a teacher-librarian in a digital learning landscape.”
