New Catholic college planned for Coomera

Fr John Echewodo and members of the Steering Committee check plans for the
new college at the site on Kerkin Road South, Coomera

BRISBANE Catholic Education is planning to open a new Prep to Year 12 college at Coomera, to cater for the rapidly-increasing population of the northern Gold Coast.

The school, which is yet to be named, will be located on 10 hectares of land on Kerkin Road South, between Dreamworld and Pimpama.

The planned opening will be dependent on capital funding approval, with approvals already granted by the Office of Non-State Schooling and the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane.

Development approval has also been granted by the Gold Coast City Council for the site, which is master planned as a four stream primary and six stream secondary school.

The school ultimately will cater for more than 1,800 students from Prep to Year 12, but is planned to open in 2019 with a smaller number of students in Prep to Year 3 and Year 7.

Its first Year 12 students will graduate in 2024.

The college will serve the rapidly developing areas of Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau, where the school-age population is growing by up to 14 per cent per year.

It will take enrolment pressure off Assisi Catholic College at Upper Coomera, which has waiting lists at many Year levels, especially for secondary places. The new school will be part of the Catholic parish of Coomera, as is Assisi.

Parish Priest, Fr John Echewodo, welcomed the plan.

“It is wonderful to see the educational mission of the Church growing in Coomera and throughout the northern Gold Coast.

“Thousands of people are moving into this area each year, and many of them are families who are seeking a quality Catholic education for their children,” Fr John said.

Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) has formed a Steering Committee to plan for the foundation and opening of the school.

The committee comprises local residents, parishioners and BCE staff and will provide advice on a suitable name for the college and its educational philosophy, offerings and enrolment procedures.
