Patron’s Day brings campuses together

Students from Southern College Catholic College’s four campuses came
together to celebrate Patron's Day

MANY voices answered the call from Southern Cross Catholic College to help celebrate its Patron’s Day.

More than 2,000 students, staff, parents and community members gathered at the Scarborough campus to honour Mary Help of Christians, the college and Australia’s patron saint.

The annual Patron’s Day was the one and only day of the year when the four campuses came together to take part in a whole-college liturgy followed by a day of action, activities and culture.

Principal Brett Horton said the day was an important inclusion in the college calendar.

He said it was a fantastic celebration of the spirit of Southern Cross Catholic College.

“Our uniqueness as a college is based on the fact we have four campuses; however, it also makes us special that as four, we are able to come together as one,” he said.

The coming together as one supported the 2017 theme common to all Lasallian schools and universities – One Call, Many Voices … Answer the Call.

Mr Horton said as a P-12 Catholic college in the Lasallian tradition, Southern Cross subscribed to five core Lasallian beliefs: faith, community, learning, justice and respect.

“A celebration of our identity as a P-12 Catholic College in the Lasallian tradition is so very important and we did so in fine style on Patron’s Day,” he said.

“We really were ‘many voices’ answering the call.”

He said the activities and events following the liturgical celebrations were worthy of a feast day.

Prep – Year 3 students enjoyed games and activities at Sutton’s Beach and there was plenty of healthy competition for the Years 4-12 students who took part in the De La Dash fun run.

Students in Years 4-6 then enjoyed an afternoon of Zumba while the Years 7-12 students took part in or showed support for those in the High Beam talent quest.

Mr Horton said the everybody was proud to celebrate the feast day of the college Patron, Mary Help of Christians, with the unique spirit for which it was renown.
