MT Maria College, Mitchelton, welcomed NRL “king" Wally Lewis to help celebrate Purple Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising epilepsy awareness.
Lewis spoke to the students about the challenges he faced having epilepsy at a time when he was in denial about the condition.
Speaking of how tough his initial diagnosis with epilepsy was, Lewis said he was embarrassed to admit he had epilepsy.
“Dealing with epilepsy is never anyone's first choice," Lewis admitted.
“I congratulate Mt Maria College for their involvement in assistance programs throughout the community to support those living with epilepsy," said Lewis.
Mt Maria Principal Glenn McConville said it was an absolute privilege to welcome NRL royalty to the college.
“It was an honour to have Wally share his story with our students," Mr McConville said.
“Wally's message of resilience and supporting each other when we are faced with hardships in our lives has truly inspired our students."
Lewis, an ambassador for Epilepsy Queensland, was invited to the college after Mt Maria was awarded the John Wellings Memorial Education Award by Epilepsy Queensland in 2018.
The award was presented to teachers and other personnel in schools who had aided people with epilepsy.
Epilepsy Queensland said Mt Maria's “students are well supported in an environment that was consistent, safe and where students with epilepsy could learn and thrive.".
