I am once again very pleased as the year begins to extend a warm welcome to parents new to Catholic education, and to those of you who are continuing – and hasn’t it been a warm beginning! Thank you for choosing a Catholic education for your children and placing your trust in us as partners in their education. I hope that this will be a very fulfilling year for you and your children and that the year has begun in a spirit of confident enthusiasm.
There are 139 schools and colleges in the Archdiocese of Brisbane educating approximately 72,000 students. This year we have opened two new schools, St Clare’s Primary School at Yarrabilba and McAuley Secondary College at Beaudesert. There is great excitement as a new school begins and a wonderful energy apparent at our two new campuses.
We have a strong emphasis on creating the right conditions for learning through creating contemporary learning environments in which information and communication technologies are embraced. A strong focus this year will be on the continued implementation of our Moving Forward Excellent Learning and Teaching strategy and the Catholic Identity strategy. You may well hear more about these projects in your school newsletters.
Beyond the school gates, there is a very important role for parents to play in lobbying politicians at both state and federal levels about funding for Catholic schools.
We rely on government funding for our capital and recurrent needs and are very grateful to the State and Federal Governments as we are committed to keeping tuition fees at a manageable level for families. If you wish to read more about how Catholic schools in Queensland are funded, further information can be found online.
The seminal document, The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium acknowledges the very important role that parents play in the educating community, since it is to them that primary and natural responsibility for their children’s education belongs. Such a close relationship with the school implies a partnership with mutual rights and responsibilities. As this new year begins be assured of our support of you as parents and of our ongoing commitment to strengthening partnerships and involvement of families in the life of the Catholic school.
With every blessing
Executive Director of Catholic Education
