Early Career Teacher program

A new initiative launched in 2019 to support early career teachers transition from graduate to a proficient career stage launched in 2019. The Early Career Teachers program now provides comprehensive and impactful professional learning and support service.

The 400-day program:

  • is based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, with a focus on four key areas: professional practices, professional identity, wellbeing and orientation.
  • involves allocation of a companion teacher for day to day support to ensure success through growing confidence and capability.
  • includes forums and network days to provide opportunity to engage with subject matter experts and peers.
  • supports the integrated spiritual and theological formation of early career teachers.

Reconciliation Action Plan

Brisbane Catholic Education launched its first Reconciliation Action Plan to promote diversity and inclusivity, and demonstrate a commitment to creating and maintaining an organisational culture that is welcoming and culturally safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. As a result, Brisbane Catholic Education is in a stronger position to address issues of disparity in education and employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples compared to non-Indigenous Australians.

The Reconciliation Action Plan:

  • recognises the powerful contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to education for thousands of years
  • commits us to honour that contribution as we look to the future and work towards closing the gap in education outcomes
  • is an important tool to assist the Brisbane Catholic Education community in the realisation of our Vision and provide greater support, understanding and opportunities for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and staff.

A new model for healthy and safe workplaces

Brisbane Catholic Education embodies a culture that values health and safety as an enabler to the delivery of quality, inclusive and contemporary Catholic education. Our approach to safety and wellbeing is founded on the idea of personal commitment and individual empowerment.

In 2019, a pilot was undertaken for a new model for delivering workplace health and safety services in schools by improving access by principals and school staff to professional workplace health and safety advice. Two Health and Safety Advisors were assigned a portfolio of schools to ensure that workplace health and safety expertise influenced and informed the prioritisation of improvements and actions in schools. The pilot achieved significant improvements in safety management in the pilot schools.
