Spirit of Catholic Education Award
The Spirit of Catholic Education Award are state-wide awards which recognise outstanding contributions by individuals within the Catholic education community, and are presented annually as part of Catholic Education Week.
Jon Sorohan from St Paul’s School, Woodridge, received a Spirit of Catholic Education Award and Rosemarie Dwyer from St Augustine’s College, Augustine Heights, was recognised for her work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with the conferral of the Aunty Joan Hendriks Reconciliation Award.
Tom Fitzsimon Award
The Tom Fitzsimon Award is a peer-nominated professional learning award sponsored by Brisbane Archdiocesan Catholic Primary Principals’ Association, which recognises a strong commitment to professional learning in the fields of leadership and education made by a leader in a Catholic school. The award consists of a professional reading grant. In 2018, Stephen Montgomery from Guardian Angels Primary School at Ashmore was presented the award by Tom Fizsimon’s widow, Margaret. Stephen was recognised as an outstanding principal and a quiet achiever, who encourages and celebrates growth in others, and is dedicated to mentoring and building positive partnerships with peers.
Shortly after the conferral of the annual Tom Fitzsimon Award at the Principals’ Leadership Forum on 6 August 2018, we received word of the passing of Margaret. May she rest in peace. Margaret’s welcome presence on these occasions each year has served as a reminder of the richness of our Brisbane Catholic Education story and the story of the remarkable people who have contributed to the narrative.
Outstanding Principal of the Year Award, Queensland School Library Association
St Teresa’s Catholic College, Noosaville, Principal David McInnes received the Outstanding Principal of the Year Award from the Queensland School Library Association (QSLA). Every year the QSLA awards one principal with the prestigious award for providing outstanding support for their school library and school library staff.
