The MASTERCLASS Speaker Series is an initiative of Brisbane Catholic Education, designed to showcase interesting and thought-provoking speakers, Australian and international. 

Each speaker is carefully chosen to appeal to a broad cross-section of the educational community – to share wisdom; provide inspiration; encourage scholarship and develop ethos.

2018 Speakers


Fr. Anthony Gittins, is a widely experienced missionary pastor and Professor of Theology and Culture at The Catholic Theological Union since 1984. He held the Bishop Ford Chair of Mission Theology from 1999–2008. Ordained in 1967, he earned M.A.s in Theoretical Linguistics and Social Anthropology and a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. He later pursued post-doctoral research at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

He is the author of fourteen books on theology, anthropology, mission, and spirituality, including Ministry At The Margins: Strategy and Spirituality for Mission (Orbis, 2002), Come, Follow Me: The Commandments of Jesus (Liguori, 2004), Where There’s Hope, There’s Life: Women’s Stories and Practical Theology (Liguori, 2006), and Called to be Sent: Co-Missioned as Disciples Today (Liguori, 2008).

Fr Anthony Gittins is a skilled retreat facilitator and speaker and will present on the topic of Formation for Mission: From Founders to Future Church with sessions on:

  1. Future Church;
  2. Formation for Mission;
  3. Stories for the Journey: Founders’ Faith.

Trevor is a Professor and researcher of Christian Education at Canterbury Christ Church University in the United Kingdom. His particular interest is in the place of distinctively Christian education in a religiously diverse context. Trevor Cooling also chairs the National Institute for Christian Education Research at Canterbury Christ Church University; is the Chair, Religious Education Council of England & Wales and Deputy Editor, International Journal of Christianity and Education.

His books include: Called to Teach: Teaching as a Mission Vocation and Doing God in Education. His latest book published this year is Lessons in Spiritual Development: Learning from Leading Secondary Schools.

John Roberto has been and continues to be an innovator in Catholic Religious Education and Youth Ministry. John is best known for his practical application of the vision and theory for ministry with and for people of all ages and stages in their lifelong growth in faith with a particular expertise in formation praxis for youth in the teen age years. He founded the Northeast Centre for Youth Ministry, later knows as the Centre for Youth Ministry Development that continues today as the Centre for Ministry Development. More recent endeavours have focused on strategies for implementing a vision for lifelong faith formation and developing ministry approaches for the 21st Century.

John will present a Masterclass titled Reimagining Faith Formation and will include sessions on:

  1. Reimagine, Create, Design for the 21st Century
  2. Understanding life journeys and the spiritual and religious needs of people today
  3. Interpreting the Challenges.
