More than 1200 young people from across Brisbane Catholic Education primary schools are ready for the annual Rugby Sevens carnival series that promotes teamwork, participation and the fun of playing sport.

Schools from Brisbane’s northside kick off the carnival series today (Wednesday May 22), offering play for Under 10 and 12 players across girls’ and boys’ divisions.

Further carnivals will be held for schools on the Sunshine Coast (29 May), Brisbane West (5 June), Brisbane South (19 June) and the Gold Coast (10 July).

The Rugby Sevens series is held with the assistance of the Queensland Rugby Union, extending a partnership that began in 2019 with the inaugural BCE carnival before the Covid-19 pandemic prevented play in 2020 and 2021.

BCE Deputy Executive Director Durm O’Riordan said the carnivals provided opportunities for younger students of all abilities to develop teamwork with their classmates and connections with other schools.

“We have had another terrific response from schools this year and the Rugby Sevens continues to grow,” he said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and staff to connect and to work together on the sporting field.”

Durm said there was a rich history of Catholic school students participating in rugby union over many years.

“We welcome players of all levels for our Rugby Sevens. The focus isn’t on winning but on participation, teamwork and developing new skills,” he said.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of the Queensland Rugby Union which help in many ways to run these carnivals.”

Nick Fogarty, the principal of St William’s School, Grovely and a former Brisbane Premier Rugby first grade coach, said his students were looking forward to the Rugby Sevens.

“Our students really look forward to the Rugby Sevens and it’s exciting to see it grow every year,” Nick said.

“They’ve been training together and building teamwork which they can test against other schools.

“Our school dispositions revolve around resilience, persistence, innovation and collaboration and there are elements in all of those in the carnival.”
