BCE student shares her hopes for the future this International Women’s Day

Plum Templeman is no ordinary Year 5 student.

In fact, the St Agatha’s Primary School Clayfield student is thinking big when it comes to the importance of International Women’s Day (IWD), sharing her hopes for the future for herself, her sisters, and other girls.

The eldest sister of four girls was asked to reflect on equality and had an insightful response.

“A long time ago women and girls didn’t get to do anything,” she said.

“It sounds like they were expected to stay inside and do chores.

“Days like International Women’s Day are important because it makes people realise that girls should have the same rights as boys and that we can do anything.”

Plum says she believes that one of the issues holding girls and women back from achieving their dreams is being afraid of what other people think.

“This is an area that can impact many people as they face challenges and limiting beliefs, and because of this, the temptation to give up becomes stronger,” she added.

Plum names sailor Jessica Watson as an inspiration.

“Jessica Watson was the youngest female to sail around the world,” she said.

“She didn’t stop at anything to follow her dream.”

Plum also says her teacher Miss Jorgensen and Principal Ms Maw as inspirational women as “they are funny and supportive in what we do.”

Plum added she has big dreams for her future and the future of her younger siblings.

“I’ve got a lot of things I want to do,” she said.

“These include being a radiologist, marine biologist, jillaroo, professional cellist, and a member of the Sydney Navy.”

The future looks just as bright for Plum’s sisters Persephone, who is in Year 4, and twins Astrid and Beatrix, who are in Prep, as she reflects on what they’d love to do in their future careers.

“I think Persephone would look at a creative job – something in making and designing,” said Plum.

“As for the twins, I want them to do absolutely anything, and I think they will as well.”

Brisbane Catholic Education would like to wish Plum, her sisters, and all Brisbane Catholic Education students a happy International Women’s Day.
