Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Executive Director Dr Sally Towns visited picturesque Hervey Bay this week on her first tour of Star of the Sea, part of her visit to some of BCE’s schools located on the Fraser Coast and in the Wide Bay-Burnett region.
Dr Towns said, “as the new Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, I’ve made it my mission to visit rural and regional schools, to experience the uniqueness of all BCE school campuses and the communities they serve.
“Star of the Sea is one of our most unique schools, located a short walk from the beach, the school offers a strong educational program along with a relaxed regional lifestyle and exciting extra-curricular activities, canoeing, rock-climbing, marine studies, and beach walks, to outback retreats and camps,” Dr Towns said.
“In my teaching career, I have learnt there are many positives to working regionally, with a variety of jobs on offer for educators looking for a sea or country change, and even more opportunities for career progression available to teachers just getting started in their profession.
“With living costs on the rise in Australia’s top five cities, you can see why educators are moving out to regional areas, for a change of pace, and if you’re thinking about making a sea change you really can’t look past Star of the Sea, Torquay.
“There’s a real sense of community in areas like Hervey Bay, with opportunities for connections to be made with other young professionals in these regional areas.
“The sub-tropical Hervey Bay also offers, beaches, sailing, snorkeling and whale watching for educators considering a sea change.
“I believe all educators should take the time throughout their careers to visit and teach regionally, as you get to become part of the community, get a wealth of professional experiences and a greater understanding of issues impacting on regional areas.

All graduate teachers are supported by BCE’s Early Career Teaching program for their first three years and ongoing.
