St John Fisher College Bracken Ridge recently hosted its biannual Girls Write Now Literary Festival (5 - 9 August), an event dedicated to fostering creativity and literary skills among students.

This year’s festival featured a line-up of guest speakers and workshop facilitators, including renowned authors, illustrators, musicians, and performers.

St John Fisher College Principal Britt Gurnett said the festival provided a platform for students to engage with accomplished professionals, explore their creativity, and develop their skills across various forms of artistic expression.

“The festival not only celebrates the talents of our students but also highlighted the importance of the arts in education, inspiring the next generation of writers, artists, and performers,” she said.

“From storytelling, character development workshops, and puppetry to watercolour techniques, poetry, and songwriting, students enhanced their artistic abilities and gained valuable insights into creative processes.

“The success of the workshops was evident in the enthusiasm and creativity our students displayed throughout the festival.

“The festival not only celebrated their talents but also provided a unique opportunity for our young women to gain confidence and inspiration in their artistic pursuits.”

Year 7 student Alison Bitwire said, “my favourite part of the Girls Write Now program was when we wrote a start to a story with Jane Godwin because I enjoy writing stories just as much as reading them.”

Year 11 student Eloise Gee said, “I love the Girls Right Now Festival because it is very inspiring and empowering hearing so many women’s experiences and their passion for writing.”

Among the guest speakers and workshop facilitators were: Bigambul and Wakka Wakka woman and writer and editor Melanie Saward, artist and illustrator Ingrid Bartkowiak, Yuwi Burra and South Sea Islander woman and song writer Waveney Yasso, author Jane Godwin, the international design-led theatre company Dead Puppet Society, word artist and youth worker Angela Peita, and word artist Ruckus Slam.
