ST Kevin's Primary School, Benowa, recorded a remarkable feat at this year's Queensland Primary All-Schools Touch Football Championships when two of the school's teams made it through to the top 16 in the mixed division.

Competing against 39 teams from across the state, it was a feat achieved by no other school in the competition and even more special for St Kevin's who were one of the smaller sized schools in the competition.  

While Team B bowed out after the final round following some solid performances, Team A charged undefeated into the grand final, which included a hard fought 2 - 1 win over Guardian Angels School, Ashmore, in the quarter finals.  

St Kevin's Coach, Michael Cashman, said he was proud of both teams who showed tremendous character, skills and spirit throughout the tournament.  

“They epitomised teamwork and always played for one another, with a spirited approach," he said.   

St Kevin's opponents in the grand final, St Anthony's School from Rockhampton, were also undefeated.  

With a number of regional representative players in their side, the game shaped up as a tough showdown.  

It did not disappoint, with St Anthony's first on the score board.   

For 13 of the 15-minute half, St Kevin's played and defended as if their lives depended on it.  

However, St Anthony's crossed again with just seconds remaining of the first half to lead two-nil.  

Early on in the second half St Kevin's applied pressure as they peppered St Anthony's try line but were denied scoring on a number of occasions.   

St Anthony's found another gear which resulted in another try midway through the half followed by two more to close out the match, winning five to nil.   

St Kevin's player, Grace Buchanan, said this year's carnival was one of the best carnivals she had the privilege of playing in.   

“Our team was so supportive of each other in every game, with teamwork being the most important thing," Grace said.  

“Everyone passed the ball to each other and if one of us made a mistake no one got upset, we just got on with the game and cheered each other on," she said.   

St Kevin's Principal Vannesse Miller congratulated the school's two teams on their amazing dedication, teamwork and effort in the lead up​ too and during the competition.  

“It was an outstanding achievement," she said.   

She also thanked teachers Emma Cashman and Michelle Conroy and volunteer coach Michael Cashman who held two training sessions per week before school over the past five weeks preparing the teams for the tournament.
