Students’ rap featured for summer preparedness

The Get Ready rap stars donate their prize of $7500 worth of emergency supplies to St Vincent De Paul

TALENTED Year 5 students from St Joseph's Primary School in Nambour have put their own funky twist on disaster messaging, with their colourful rap featuring in the Sunshine Coast Council's disaster preparedness campaign launched this week.

Calling on locals to prepare for a disaster, by asking 'When mother nature hits, will you know what to do?' and 'So get ready Sunshine Coast, make a plan to show that you know when to stay and you know when to go', their catchy rhyme was the winner of Council's competition as part of Get Ready Queensland Week (October 10 – 16).

St Joseph's Primary School Teacher Brett Strathearn said the aim of the rap is to remind residents of all ages to be prepared.

“I have no doubt this project has started many important conversations with their friends and family, spreading the preparedness message even further," Mr Strathearn said

“It shows even our youngest community members can play a significant role in getting ready for the next big storm, bushfire, flood or other disaster."

This is the second year in a row the School has won the competition, and have again donated their prize of $7500 worth of emergency supplies to St Vincent De Paul to help support local residents in need this summer.

“The students poured their heart and soul into creating the Get Ready rap and our entire community is so proud of their achievement," Mr Strathearn said.

“Not only have they had the opportunity to showcase their ingenuity, but they have discovered so much about preparing for disasters."

Monique, Adelaide, Lily, Digby and William were the creative writers and performers in the team, whose message will now reach and motivate thousands of locals to make what could be life-saving plans.

“It was a great experience to be a part of the Get Ready campaign because we got to help other people prepare for natural disasters," Digby said.

“It is awesome to know we've helped spread a message that can help keep families safe this storm season," Monique said.

“It was also so much fun working as a team to make a television ad."

The rap is being played on Channel 7, MixFM and Council's social media channels during October.
