To foster the next generation of technology and coding experts, Siena Catholic College Sippy Downs hosted an Open Day in partnership with a major tech giant last week (Wednesday, 21 August).

The Open Day, which drew educators and students from across Queensland, showcased the College’s pioneering efforts in bridging the digital skills gap.

Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Siena Catholic College student designers and developers, explored how educators are helping improve diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and how Xcode can take learners from their first line of code to building their first app.

As part of the Open Day, educators also heard from Year 10 student Lochlan, who showcased the app he developed that helps track alcohol consumption. Year 9 student Issy shared her STEM MAD app, designed to support students with social and emotional challenges.

As part of his presentation, Lochlan said he was passionate about Digital Solutions because “it allows me to combine creativity with technology, solving real-world problems in an innovative way”.

Student presenter Issy added she “wanted to develop an app that assisted students with additional needs who may require extra support in setting up their day”.

“It adjusts daily timetables with any changes that may occur throughout the day, as well as any supply teachers as room changes,” she said.

“This is important as some students respond better when they have this information in advance. It also tracks mood over time.”

Siena Catholic College Academic Leader of Technologies, Paul Dionysius, said that currently, only 1500 students across Queensland are enrolled in digital solutions.

“Our hopes are that the Open Day will help nurture the next generation of tech professionals,” he said.

“We’d like to increase the number of students taking digital solutions across the state.

“This event is one way we could inspire educators to get more students into digital solutions by building teacher capabilities.

“Our College’s digital solutions program encourages exploration of real-world problems through coding.

“This approach not only drives student interest but also helps build resilience and a sense of achievement for students.

“The event was a way we could showcase to other educators how they can start similar programs at their school.”
