Sophia College will offer affordable, high-quality education within a framework of Catholic values and individual care for every student.
The college will form part of a 19 hectare educational and eco-sciences precinct as part of a master-planned design.
The school will open with Year 7 and continue to expand each year until the first Year 12 students graduate in 2026.
Plans for the college include an eco-sciences precinct that will provide students a learning environment and resources catering for rural technologies, sciences and industries
The college will be framed around the Franciscan charism in honour of both St Francis and Pope Francis, whose letter “Laudato Si’ provides a clear statement on how we need to develop an ‘integral ecology’
Reflecting its connection to the Franciscan tradition, the Archbishop of Brisbane, Mark Coleridge, has approved the college name to be Sophia College.
Sophia is the Greek word for ‘wisdom’ and is also a title for God, especially God the Son, and there are churches and schools named as Sancta Sophia (Holy Wisdom).
The spiritual writer, Joyce Rupp, describes ‘Sophia as being present in the beginning of creation. Sophia is an expression of the presence of God. This ‘wisdom’ of creation makes such a beautiful name to a college committed to caring for our common home!
The announcement of the school principal will be made in 2020.
The building and development process will commence immediately, and tenders will be sought for works to commence in early 2020.
