Highly Accomplished Teacher, Michael White, has been instrumental in shaping a vibrant music culture at St Benedict’s College Mango Hill, channelling his passion to inspire students to reach their potential.

Certified through a rigorous national approach, Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers (HALTs) play a vital role within BCE, driving innovation, fostering professional growth and elevating teaching practice across their schools.

Michael’s journey from foundation staff member in 2013 to a Highly Accomplished Teacher and leading force in the arts, has been marked by resilience and a deep commitment to student growth at the College.

Michael said it was deeply humbling to see his vision for the St Benedict’s College Music Department come to life, with participation in classroom music flourishing.

“I am so proud to see that Music is now a significant part of the College’s identity, thanks in large part to the introduction of lunchtime concerts, which have become a beloved tradition and a powerful learning tool,” Michael said.

“These events have become a platform for students to set challenging learning goals, embrace high expectations, and experience the thrill of live performance.”

The school hosts two concerts each term, morning-tea performances for Years 9 and 10, and lunchtime performances for Years 11 and 12.

“Since 2023, the music program has expanded to include performances at school carnivals where students deliver up to three hours of music, often in high-energy sets that incorporate wind and brass instruments,” he said.

“During these performances, senior students are encouraged to entertain the crowd, pushing their creative boundaries and refining their stagecraft.”

St Benedict’s College Mango Hill Principal, Tameika Grist, said Michael’s work as a Highly Accomplished Teacher is an example of how a teacher’s passion and dedication can ignite a culture of excellence and inspire students.

“Michael’s legacy at St Benedict’s College is not just measured in concerts but in the confidence, creativity, and the vibrant community of young musicians he has helped build through music.”

“His influence now extends beyond the classroom with three College graduates currently studying at the Griffith Conservatorium of Music and multiple alumni enrolled in tertiary music programs across other universities, with several aspiring to become music educators themselves.”

BCE currently has 33 certified Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers, 41 teachers awaiting certification results and another 135 applicants working towards HALT certification.
