Principal Justin McCarthy, who joined St Joseph’s Primary School, Murgon, in August 2023, is now a permanent part of the school's future starting from Term 2.
A proud local, Justin has called the region home for more than 20 years, treasuring the opportunity to teach in rural schools.
Describing himself as "fairly country at heart," Justin said he feels privileged to work alongside a committed team of educators at St Joseph’s School.
"The staff are incredibly dedicated, and I feel honoured to share in their passion for rural education," he said.
Known for his approachable leadership style, Justin can often be found chatting with students on the playground, joining in a game of handball, or visiting classrooms to celebrate student achievement.
"Being a small school, I get the opportunity to visit every class frequently, which I love," he said.
"It’s wonderful to see the great progress our students are making, and to be part of their learning journey."
Justin’s deep commitment to student wellbeing, academic success, and holistic development reflects the school’s Marist charism.
"The faith-filled education offered here focuses on the growth of the whole person—spiritually, emotionally, and academically," he said.
"As educators we have a moral responsibility to care for and advocate for every child.
“At the end of the day, our mission is about giving every young person the best future possible.
“That’s what gets me up every morning and brings me joy."
A hands-on leader Justin doesn't shy away from getting involved in school life outside the classroom.
Students have quickly warmed to their new Principal, describing him as ‘tall and friendly’—someone they can easily talk to about their dreams and learning goals.
Every few weeks Justin also drives the school bus to Cherbourg to pick up students in the morning, often to the amusement of the children, who delight in giving him directions to school. He also enjoys taking students on excursions locally.
"The spirit of the students here is incredible," Justin said.
"They are welcoming, full of wonderful abilities, and naturally open-hearted.
“The community itself is respectful and easy to know—it’s a joy to be part of it."
