Fifty years seems a long time ago for the 250 primary age students who attend St Peter Chanel Primary School, The Gap.
But it was indeed 50 years ago this August, that Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) School St Peter Chanel Primary School opened its doors to its first 58 local students.
Since then, thousands of students have walked through the doors of the school with bright smiles and even brighter futures, under the protection and spiritual guidance of their Patron Saint St Peter Chanel.
With today, 28 April marking St Peter Chanel’s Feast Day, the students at St Peter Chanel have been busy celebrating with a whole school mass, followed by fun physical activities and a shared morning tea on the oval. Students also welcomed three Sisters of Charity to festivities, to recognise the founding charism of the school.
“Today’s celebrations are special as our school nears its 50
th
anniversary,” said St Peter Chanel Acting School Principal Paul McGlone.
“It is so important as we near our 50
th
year anniversary that our students understand the importance of St Peter Chanel’s life and how his life is still relevant to us even today.
“To mark our 50
th
anniversary, this Feast Day each family from our school was also provided with a book ‘St Peter Chanel – the man with the great heart’ written by author Warren Hopley.
“At the end of Term 1 our senior students and staff were lucky enough to meet with Warren, who shared his extensive knowledge about St Peter Chanel’s life with them in preparation for today’s Feast Day celebrations.
“Our school has come a long way since the 28 August 1972, and I look forward to seeing what the next 50 years has install for this wonderful school."
