Community-centric leadership – John Bates embarks on new journey as Principal of St Stephen’s School

With experience spanning over a decade in Catholic education leadership, John Bates brings a wealth of knowledge and a heart full of passion to his new role as Principal of St Stephen’s School Algester. 

Reflecting on his path to leadership, John recalls how his growing interest in the wider school community and encouragement from his colleagues led him to pursue Principalship.  
 
“My favourite part about being a Principal is building the relationships and connections with families and students,” he says. 
 
"I find the journey we share with our students and their families, from the interview stage to graduation, is incredibly rewarding. 
 
“Guiding students through the ups and downs and seeing the gratitude from their families as they go on to make a positive impact in our world fills me with pride.” 
 
John's vision for St Stephen's is to foster happy and engaged learners. 
 
“I believe in setting high expectations and providing the necessary support for students to achieve them,” he says. 
 
When speaking about his leadership style, John says he feels making time for his staff and students is of utmost importance. 
 
“Beyond academic achievements, my focus is on the wellbeing of my entire new school community,” he says. 
 
“I want my whole school community to know I am always there and ready to support them. 
 
"This year I am looking forward to working with our school leadership team to foster a collaborative environment that delivers high-quality education and nurtures happy positive children. 
 
"In 2024 I will be practicing gratitude and teaching students that acknowledging our blessings is fundamental to success. 
 
“As the new Principal of St Stephen’s, I aim to instil values that reach beyond the classroom, encouraging our students to be aware of every positive aspect of them.” 
 
In his spare time, John enjoys supporting the Brisbane Broncos, playing touch football, camping, and spending quality time with his family. 
 
John’s extensive leadership experience includes roles as Principal at Our Lady of the Rosary School, Kenmore; Acting Principal at St Anthony’s Primary School, Alexandra Hills; Principal at St James Primary School, Coorparoo; Assistant Principal Religious Education, Acting Assistant Principal Administration at Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Coorparoo; and Acting Assistant Principal Religious Education at St Bernard’s Primary School, Upper Mt Gravatt.
