Immerse yourself in the richness and diversity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures.
In a full day programme (9.30 am-1.45pm) teachers, students, parents and caregivers will experience the living traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Activities include song and dance, art, Torres Strait Islander culture, bushwalk, foods and fibres, storytelling and boomerang throwing.
In addition to visiting our beautiful centre, opportunities to have our programme delivered at your school or other locations are available. We also have a Cultural tutor who can also visit your location, to present a shorter, individualised program of between an hour and an hour and a half. This option works very well for prep and early childhood learners.
In conjunction with ongoing studies in both primary and secondary schools, the programme is mapped to accommodate the integration of Indigenous studies across the curriculum.
Centre Background
The Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre was established in 1989 by Brisbane Catholic Education in conjunction with the Aboriginal and Islander Catholic Council and the local community.
The aims of the centre are to promote reconciliation, develop cultural understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.The philosophy of the centre is based on a holistic view of creation, recognising that humanity is part of the environment and not separate to it.
A relaxed, friendly atmosphere is created to express teaching / learning styles, which reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, providing opportunities for teachers and students to explore aspects of both traditional and contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies.
