High performing staff 21 Jan 2025 ©Brisbane Catholic Education, St Flannan's School, Zillmere (2024). When the student becomes the Principal! Cheryl Bell, a former student of St Flannan’s School Zillmere, has stepped into the role of Principal at the school, marking her first permanent Principalship. With a strong background in education and a personal connection to the school, Cheryl is excited to lead the community that once shaped her own education journey. Q: What inspired you to pursue Principalship? A: I’ve always aspired to be a leader. Throughout my career, I’ve taken on acting Principalship roles, as well as roles like Assistant Principal Religious Education, and Assistant Principal Administration, and I was Acting Principal at St Flannan’s in 2024. Leadership is part of my passion—whether in the classroom or the community, I naturally gravitate toward it. Q: What is your connection to St Flannan’s School? A: I attended St Flannan’s in Year 6 and Year 7 after moving from Townsville to Brisbane. My time here was wonderful—I connected with my peers and teachers, particularly the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters. They nurtured us with compassion and kindness, set high expectations, and inspired us to achieve our best. Their legacy has always stayed with me. Q: Who were your role models during your time at St Flannan’s? A: The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters were a big inspiration to me, as well as the teachers I had. They were compassionate, kind, and dedicated to their students. One teacher, Mother Angela, was the Principal at the time, and her dedication, creativity, and ability to inspire her students ignited a spark in me. I had the privilege to meet with Sister Christa and Sister Cath during our 70th Anniversary last year, their stories of the school’s beginnings have given me great inspiration to continue their legacy. Q: How did your experiences as a student influence your career as a teacher and leader? A: My teachers instilled in me a love for learning and leadership. I wasn’t afraid to ask questions or take the lead on school projects. I was heavily involved in sports and coaching, which became a passion I carried into my teaching career. I’ve always enjoyed being part of the community and nurturing young minds beyond the classroom. Q: What are some of your proudest achievements in your career? A: One highlight was introducing hockey to many schools during my time as a Physical Education teacher. It was a joy to start Brisbane’s first school hockey programs. Coaching has always been a passion of mine. Q: What is your vision for the school community moving forward? A: St Flannan’s has a rich tapestry of history, diversity, and collaboration. My vision is to nurture a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone feels they belong. In 2024 we have our 70th anniversary and as we look to the future, I am focused on preserving our legacy of compassion and service. Q: What makes St Flannan’s special to you? A: This school has always been a diverse and multicultural community, something I appreciated as a student and now as a leader. The values of acceptance, kindness, and love are deeply rooted here, and I see those same qualities in the staff who tirelessly support every student, no matter their background. It’s truly a special place where families feel welcome, and children are happy. Q: What do you most look forward to this year? A: I look forward to welcoming new families and immersing them in our vibrant community. Our focus will always be on ensuring that everyone—students, parents, and staff—feels valued and connected.
