Michael McInerney is gearing up to officially take the reins as Principal of St Peter's Primary School Rochedale this January – and he has some big plans. After acting as Principal since August 2023, Michael is excited to become an official part of his much-loved school community. Q: What do you consider your greatest strength as a Principal? A: Understanding the unique challenges of 21st-century parents. As a parent of three children myself—Jacob (17), Ella (14), and Zeo (19)—I can truly empathise with today’s families. With so much to juggle, getting the kids to school in the morning can be a real challenge. I aim to support our parents by creating an environment that not only prioritises education but also fosters community, making it easier for families to feel connected and involved. Q: How do you feel about becoming the Principal of St Peter’s? A: I am honoured to lead St Peter’s, a school with 45 years of history and a great reputation. I’m ready to continue the incredible work of my predecessors and build on our strong foundation. Q: What are your plans for St Peter’s in 2025? A: We have big plans! We’re adding two new literacy coaches, one numeracy coach, and a Primary Learning Leader to improve teacher capacity and enhance the learning experience for both staff and students. It’s all about creating an ‘A+ experience’ for everyone. Our focus will be on fostering a collaborative environment that prioritises continuous improvement in literacy and numeracy. Q: How do you like to connect with your students? A: Building strong relationships with students is key to fostering a positive learning environment. I like to get to know their interests. As a cricket enthusiast, I often connect with students over our shared love for the sport. Whether it’s sharing batting tips or just having a laugh while playing a game, these connections help create a positive school environment. Q: How do you plan to collaborate with the St Peter’s Parish Priest, Father Johny in 2025? A: Father Johny was a Principal, and I’m blessed to have his guidance. Together, we’ll continue to grow this faith-filled learning community, combining his experience with my vision for the school. Q: What are some of the key highlights for 2025 at St Peter’s? A: We’re excited about the Sydney-Canberra trip for 75 Year 6 students, the introduction of house groups with coloured t-shirts, and interschool sports. These initiatives aim to enhance student engagement, foster school spirit, and create memorable experiences for everyone.
