04 Nov 2025 ©Brisbane Catholic Education, St Bernard's Primary School Mt Gravatt (2025) St Bernard’s Primary School in Upper Mt Gravatt is buzzing with excitement as its youngest learners don high-vis vests and hard hats to witness the transformation of their future classrooms. The current renovation of the existing Penola building marks a bold step toward welcoming the 2026 Prep cohort into a vibrant new learning environment, heralding a fresh chapter in early education at the Catholic primary school. The redesigned building will feature two new dedicated Prep classrooms and three new Year 1 and 2 classrooms, all tailored to support a variety of learning styles and social interactions. St Bernard’s Primary School Principal Daniel Hodge expressed his excitement about the project, emphasising its student-focused design. “The school leadership team worked closely with architects to ensure the new environment is both contemporary and inspiring,” he said. “The classrooms have been thoughtfully planned with flexibility and wellbeing in mind, incorporating natural light, smart storage solutions and dedicated sensory corners to support everything from small group learning to imaginative play.” Mr Hodge also highlighted the impact the renovation will have on educational practices and the ability to enhance both teaching and learning outcomes. “The new spaces are specifically designed to support our youngest learners and will empower early learning educators to adapt their environments to suit diverse teaching approaches. “This will provide the critical foundation for students to start their successful academic journey, incorporating a play-based and curriculum focused learning experience.” At the heart of the renovation is a dynamic corridor that will serve as a hub for creativity and collaboration and will include tiered seating, informal gathering zones and quiet reading nooks. “The design of the building is focused on encouraging our early learning students to engage, explore and connect in meaningful ways.” The updated building will feature a new façade and roof, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency while setting a fresh, modern tone. The renovation complements other recent upgrades across the campus, including a revitalised Early Learning playground featuring an in-ground trampoline, new amenities, and refreshed library and classroom spaces within the existing Administration building. The transformation of the Penola building is a testament to the school’s commitment to nurturing growth and building a campus that reflects the values and needs of its evolving community. St Bernard’s Primary School, Upper Mt Gravatt, is one of 146 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools across South East Queensland, providing an education to believe in.
