Since stepping into the role as Principal of St Mary’s College, Maryborough in Term 3, 2024, Bree Brockenshire had no idea the impact she would have.

Spearheading the College’s Prep to 12 Catholic Identity Project alongside fellow St Mary’s Primary School Principal Michelle White and Acting Principal Stephani Barnes, the duo has revolutionised the way the primary and secondary interrelate.

From strengthening transitions from primary to secondary school, to consistent teaching practices and shared leadership practices, the benefits to students and their families are already clear.

Principal Bree Brockenshire said their connection had improved student outcomes while also making life easier for local families.

“With the cost of living higher than ever, we’ve started with streamlining school uniforms and our College logo,” she said.

“Now St Mary’s Primary School students can wear their school uniforms to our College in Year 7 and beyond.

“Allowing students to keep their uniforms from primary school is not only saving parents money, but it’s also creating a sense of familiarity and ease as students transition to our secondary campus.

“We’ve also streamlined our learning and teaching framework and pastoral care structures.

“This approach ensures that students can expect the same level of care and educational offerings from Prep right through to Year 12.”

Bree said that as a result, they had seen stronger attendance rates and improved outcomes for students.

“We are seeing continued NAPLAN and ATAR excellence and improved post-school transition outcomes for our graduates,” she said.

“Our students are also happier, and our primary aged students have access to a wider range of advanced facilities and opportunities.

“Our College has the widest subject selection on the Fraser Coast with 40 plus academic and vocational pathways on offer.

“In 2026, we also offer expanded STEM, leadership, and immersion offerings, including opportunities to travel to Japan and Canberra.”

Acting Principal Stephani Barnes said, “together our campuses provide seamless Prep to Year 12 education built on faith, excellence and community”.

“We share co-curricular strength with more than 30 clubs, leadership and community engagement opportunities on offer,” she said.

“Our Little Angels Playgroup is also another way our school can extend connection to local families, creating shared spaces for children as young as four to learn, laugh, and feel part of the St Mary’s community from the get-go.”

In 2026, the St Mary’s Primary School campus is also expecting a new playground and Learning Innovation Precinct, alongside expanded agricultural and horticultural programs for hands-on learning.

The Prep to Year 12 Catholic Identity Project was recognised at BCE’s Excellence Awards 2025 and also won the Fraser Coast Business and Tourism Awards in 2025.
