The St Kevin’s School, Geebung community is sending a clear message of hope this Easter, joining together to Shave for a Cure (Thursday 2 April).

A total of 12 students and three staff gathered to shave or cut their hair, supporting families affected by cancer, including one of their own school families who was recently impacted by the disease

Assistant Principal Religious Education Kristin Byrne said the fundraiser was a deeply personal event that bought the whole school community together.

“As a close-knit school community, we wanted to find a way we could stand together in solidarity with the family during this difficult time.

“Shave for a Cure gave us the opportunity to show our support in a very visible and compassionate way, reminding the family that they are surrounded by care, prayer and hope.”

Kristin adds that her students have shown extraordinary compassion and determination throughout the fundraiser.

“We have had numerous families within our community touched by cancer over the past few years and the way our community wraps its arms around them is a beautiful example of what I like to say is Catholicity in action,” she said.

“It is also a testament to our shared values of compassion, generosity and care for one another.”

The school initially set a goal to raise $2500, but students and their families have exceeded this outcome, raising a total of over $25,000 so far.

About Year 1 student Elliott’s battle with cancer

Elliott was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour in August last year, aged 5, after complaints of a sore stomach.  He underwent a 7-hour surgery to remove the tumour, as well as his left kidney and surrounding lymph nodes. He is currently undergoing 27 weeks of intensive chemotherapy, which has taken a toll on his body and immune system, including the loss of his hair. He and his family have endured several ups and downs during his journey and he is looking forward to getting back to school and socialising with his friends again.
