Across Brisbane Catholic Education, learning and teaching processes are guided by the Australian and Religious Education Curriculum and our shared Model of Pedagogy: Teaching for Learning. This system-wide approach is grounded in the science of learning and focuses on helping every child grow as a confident, capable learner through clear expectations, high-impact teaching practices, and opportunities to deepen learning.

In English and Mathematics, schools continue to strengthen the foundations that children need for long-term success. In literacy, this includes a strong focus on reading, spelling, writing, and oral language, taught through explicit and evidence-informed approaches that build knowledge step by step. These approaches are consistent with the Australian Curriculum and are designed to help children understand how language works, not just memorise words or strategies.

What this looks like for your child

Across BCE schools, teachers plan for learning using a process that supports students to know what they are learning, why it matters and how to improve. You may notice that your child is encouraged to practise skills regularly, talk about their learning, receive feedback, and reflect on their progress. In reading and spelling, this includes explicit teaching of letter-sound relationships, word parts, and spelling patterns, as well as opportunities to apply these skills in meaningful reading and writing tasks.

How you can support learning at home

When reading together

- Encourage your child to read every day, even for short periods.
- If your child gets stuck on a word, prompt them to use what they know about sounds and word parts to work it out.
- Read aloud to your child regularly, including texts that are above their independent reading level, to build vocabulary and understanding.

When supporting spelling and writing

- Ask your child to say a word aloud and break it into sounds or syllables before writing it.
- Encourage them to think about spelling patterns, prefixes, suffixes, and base words they already know.
- Remind them that spelling improves with practice and that mistakes are part of learning.

Through everyday conversations

- Talk with your child about what they are learning at school and ask them to explain their thinking.
- Use learning language such as sounds, syllables, sentences, paragraphs,  prefixes and suffixes.
- Praise effort, persistence and improvement, not just correct answers.

By working together, families and schools support children to develop strong foundations, confidence in their learning, and a love of learning that lasts well beyond the classroom.
