From apprenticeships to academic pursuits, St Michael’s College, Merrimac educator Wayne Forrest is helping students find their path.

The Head of Future Pathways has been named a finalist in Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) NGS Super Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching in Secondary School, recognising the significant impact of his work in opening doors and creating pathways that lead well beyond the classroom.

St Michael’s College, Merrimac Principal Veronica Wasiak said Wayne consistently placed students at the centre of learning.

“The breadth and diversity of opportunities available at our College is a direct result of Wayne’s vision and his deep commitment to ensuring every student is known, valued, and supported,” she said.

“He is passionate about creating pathways that are truly personalised, recognising that no two students are the same, and that each young person deserves a future shaped around their individual strengths, interests, and aspirations.

“Wayne has also championed the START Program at our College, further expanding the opportunities available to our senior students. Meaning our students have access to more opportunities beyond the school gates, from traineeships to apprenticeships, and work experience, all while they complete their Year 12 studies.”

Wayne said he is incredibly humbled to be named a finalist in the BCE Excellence Awards.

“For me, the nomination isn’t about one program or initiative, it’s about consistently turning up and doing what you can, every day, to support young people and help them see what’s possible for their future,” he said.

“I’ve always believed that no two students are the same, so their pathways shouldn’t be either.

“Across my 30-year career, my focus has always been on creating opportunities that are flexible and personalised, so every student can find something that genuinely connects with who they are, and where they want to go.”

Wayne said the real reward was seeing his students succeed once they leave the College gates.

“Over time, you realise that the small conversations, the encouragement, and the belief you show in a student can stay with students for years,” he said.

“I had a moment recently where I ran into a former student who spoke about how those small moments helped shape the direction he took in life.

“To hear that you’ve played even a small role in helping someone find their path, that’s incredibly special.

“At the heart of it all is a passion for helping students discover who they are and giving them the confidence they need to pursue their ambitions once they leave our College gates.”
