High performing staffInnovative practicesSecondary school 06 Aug 2026 Brisbane Catholic Education is proud to celebrate Assistant Principal Shane Tooley from St Peter Claver College, Riverview, who has been selected to present at the Korea–Australia AI in Education Online Conference. Held across the next two days (6-7 August), the conference brings together leading researchers, educators and policymakers from around the world to explore the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence in education. As part of the conference program, Shane will present virtually to a global audience of approximately 10,000, sharing insights from St Peter Claver College's approach to implementing generative AI in a secondary school setting. Shane's work has focused on the strategic rollout of Microsoft Copilot for staff and students, assessment redesign, and the development of a whole-school framework for the ethical and responsible use of AI. “One of the most exciting aspects of education is that although our contexts differ, we share a common commitment to helping young people flourish,” Shane said. “Being able to exchange ideas with educators from Korea reinforces the importance of collaboration and continual learning as we navigate the opportunities and challenges presented by AI. “Our focus at St Peter Claver College has always been about using technology in ways that help students learn more deeply, think more critically and become more independent learners.” Beyond implementation, Shane has led extensive professional learning, supported middle leaders as change agents, and established clear expectations for AI use across the College. His approach has centred on strengthening teacher capability, building student digital literacy, supporting academic integrity, and ensuring innovation enhances, rather than replaces, quality teaching practice. "The most important lesson we've learnt, is that successful AI implementation starts with people, not technology," Shane said. “The greatest impact has come from investing in staff capability, creating opportunities for collaboration, and maintaining a clear focus on educational purpose. “By focusing on ethical use, critical thinking and teacher expertise, we've been able to create a framework that supports both innovation and student success." The conference will provide a platform for educators worldwide to share leading practices and explore how AI can be used to enhance learning outcomes. Last term, Shane also represented St Peter Claver College at the National Education Summit – AI in the Classroom in Brisbane. Digital Excellence Executive Leigh Williams said Shane's selection reflects both his leadership and the innovative work taking place at St Peter Claver College. “We are incredibly proud to see Shane representing St Peter Claver College and Brisbane Catholic Education on an international stage,” Leigh said. “His leadership reflects the kind of work we are seeing across BCE, educators engaging thoughtfully with AI, asking strong questions, and keeping student learning and human formation at the centre.” For more information about St Peter Claver College, Riverview or to enrol click here.
