“Rachel is someone who brings a sense of calm to even the busiest school days,” – Our Lady of Dolours School Principal Tricia Howard.
When Rachel Stigter was named the recipient of the Excellence in Safety and Wellbeing Award at the Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Excellence Awards, it came as no surprise to those at Our Lady of Dolours School, Mitchelton.
“My school is a very special place to work,” Rachel said when accepting her award.
A classroom teacher, wellbeing champion, School Chaplain and Defence School Mentor, Rachel is the person many staff and students turn to for support, encouragement and a sense of calm.
Through her work, wellbeing has become more than just a program at the school. It's part of everyday life.
Creating a culture of wellbeing
Rachel's award-winning approach is all about helping people feel supported, connected, and valued.
She creates opportunities for staff to come together, check in with one another, and take time to focus on their wellbeing, such as through activities, social events, practical tips and resources.
For Rachel, wellbeing is more than a program or initiative.
“It is the foundation upon which thriving school communities are built,” she said.
“I think the main takeaway is the connections I am able to make with our students, staff, parents, and parishioners,” she said.
"I want every person who walks through our school gates to feel seen, supported, and like they belong. When staff and students feel connected, that's when they can truly thrive."
Principal Tricia said that Rachel has made looking after yourself part of everyday life at Our Lady of Dolours.
“Her thoughtful approach has helped build a strong sense of community, where people feel connected, supported, and appreciated,” she said.
“As a result, wellbeing has become a defining part of the school's culture, benefiting staff, students and families alike.”
Supporting students to thrive
Tricia adds Rachel's impact also extends to the classroom.
“Through her multiple roles she helps students feel safe, supported and ready to learn,” she said.
“She is often a trusted person students turn to when they need guidance, encouragement, or simply someone to listen.
“Rachel has a unique ability to create a calm and welcoming environment where students feel comfortable being themselves.
“Whether helping a student through a difficult time, supporting a family through change, or simply being a trusted presence around the school, Rachel is passionate about building relationships.”
A benchmark for wellbeing leadership
Tricia said what sets Rachel apart is her ability to translate wellbeing theory into meaningful practice.
“By combining strategic thinking with genuine compassion, she has developed sustainable approaches that strengthen both individual wellbeing, and collective school culture,” she said.
“Her work demonstrates how schools can move beyond wellbeing programs to create environments where wellbeing is embedded in everyday interactions, decision making, and relationships.
“She inspires others across the BCE system.”
In 2026, Rachel was also appointed to the Our Lady of Dolours leadership team, recognising the significant impact she has had on staff and student wellbeing across the school.
