Painting a legacy - students capture the spirit of a foundation school during NAIDOC Week

A powerful artwork created by a Notre Dame family is helping tell the story of the Bells Creek College, as the new school continues to shape its identity.

Unveiled during NAIDOC Week (5 to 12 July), ‘This Is Us’ was created by students Milly, Olliver, Adeline, and Caylee alongside Mother Saraa. 

Established in January 2025, Notre Dame College is still in its early years, creating traditions, forging connections, and laying the foundations for future generations. The artwork captures this journey, representing the students, staff, families, faith, and wider community who are helping shape the College's story.

At its heart stands the College's eagle totem, symbolising strength, connection, and the spirit of the Notre Dame family. Through intricate symbolism and cultural storytelling, the artwork reflects the values, relationships, and shared purpose that unite the community.

Student artist Milly said the family wanted the artwork to capture the legacy being created.

"We created this artwork to honour the people, values, and shared journey that make our College community,” she said.

“It celebrates the legacy each person leaves behind while reminding us that we all belong, contribute, and help shape the story of those who follow.”

The artwork's message resonated strongly with this year's NAIDOC Week theme, 50 Years Deadly, which recognises and honours the strength, vision, and legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Like the theme itself, ‘This Is Us’ looks both to the past, and the future, acknowledging the stories that have come before, while also recognising the role young people play in creating what comes next.

The artwork also reflects the College's vision of being a faith-filled learning community creating a better future. Guided by its values of Compassion, Courage, and Hope, Notre Dame College seeks to nurture brave spirits, strong minds and compassionate hearts.

Mother Saraa said creating the artwork together was a memorable experience for the family.

"We had the best time creating this piece and can't wait to see it hanging in the new library," she said.

Notre Dame College Principal Dan McShea said, ‘This Is Us’ will stand as a lasting reminder of its beginnings capturing the people, culture, and shared values that have helped shape the College from its inception in 2025. 

“In years to come, it will tell future students the story of where their College began and the community that built it together,” he said.
