From forensic science clubs and National Science Week activities to sustainability programs, Our Lady's College, Annerley Laboratory Technician Katrina Lippiatt is helping bring science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to life by providing the resources, expertise and support that make hands-on learning possible.

Katrina's work behind the scenes and in the classroom has earned her the Archdiocesan Property and Building Services Excellence in a School-Based Non-Teaching Role award at the recent Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) Excellence Awards. The award recognises the significant contribution she has made to student learning and teacher capability.

As a former BCE student, Katrina understands the lasting impact a school community can have on a young person's life. After attending St Rita's Primary School, Victoria Point and Carmel College, Thornlands she has come full circle, now helping her own students discover their passion for STEM.

"This award is special to me because I was a BCE student myself," Katrina said.

"To now work in a BCE school and help shape the experiences of young people, just like myself, is incredibly meaningful.

"I love helping students build confidence in themselves and showing them that they absolutely belong in STEM.”

Inspiring the next generation of scientists

Year 11 student Oshadi said "Ms Lippiatt is kind and always willing to help. She helped me realise I can do anything, be a Scientist or a Doctor, and I don't need to be afraid."

Our Lady's College Principal Andrea Merrett said Katrina has an exceptional ability to bring STEM to life for students.

"Through her expertise, creativity, and commitment to authentic learning experiences, Katrina helps students see STEM not just as subjects, but as something they can actively engage with and enjoy," she said.

"She creates learning experiences that spark curiosity, encourage exploration, and empower students to think like scientists.

“Whether in the classroom, the laboratory or through enrichment activities, Katrina inspires students to believe in their abilities and embrace new challenges."

"What makes Katrina's impact so special is the way she helps students see what is possible.

“She fosters confidence, nurtures a love of learning, and encourages students to pursue opportunities they may never have imagined for themselves.

Strengthening teaching and learning

While Katrina's impact on students is widely recognised, her support of colleagues is equally valued across the College community.

Andrea adds that what sets Katrina apart is her commitment to helping those around her succeed.

"Katrina is a highly respected colleague who generously shares her knowledge and expertise with staff across the College," she said.

"She works alongside teachers to develop engaging learning experiences for our students.

“Her collaborative approach helps build confidence in others and strengthens teaching and learning outcomes.

“Whether she is mentoring new staff, supporting teachers to deliver lessons or contributing to College initiatives, she approaches every opportunity with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to help others."
