This week, students from across Brisbane Catholic Education came together for the annual BCE Esports Competition, delivered in partnership with The FUSE Cup.

While the competition brought all the excitement of a traditional sporting event, its impact extended far beyond the screen.

The secondary school winning team from Our Lady’s College, Annerley, said the result came as an exciting surprise.

“The best part wasn’t just winning, it was knowing we’d done it together as a team. We’re really grateful to our teachers for encouraging and helping us through the competition.”

Senior Advisor - Digital Learning and Experience Max Squires explains the event is designed to develop the future-focused capabilities young people need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.

"The Minecraft Capture the Flag competition challenges students to work collaboratively, think strategically and adapt quickly under pressure," Max said.

“Success relies not on individual achievement, but on communication, critical thinking, decision-making and trust. These are the same capabilities that underpin effective leadership and prepare students for life beyond the classroom.”

As technology continues to transform how we learn, work and connect, BCE schools are embracing opportunities to help students develop both digital capability and wellbeing through structured, values-based esports programs.

Coordinator of San Sisto College’s esports program, Learning and Teaching Leader Deborah Cottle said esports created a unique environment where students can discover and develop strengths that may not always be visible in traditional learning or sporting settings.

"Esports provides a platform for students to build confidence, collaborate with others and contribute to a shared goal," she said.

"Much like a captain leading a team on the sporting field, students learn how to motivate their peers, navigate challenges, manage setbacks and make informed decisions under pressure.

"Every match requires creative thinking, problem-solving and adaptability, all while remaining focused on the success of the team."

Importantly, the competition also helps students build their digital citizenship.

San Sisto College Principal Warren Bath adds, “In a world where much of young people's social, educational and professional lives occur online, learning how to engage responsibly and respectfully in digital spaces has never been more important.”

“Through structured, supervised competition, students experience first-hand the value of positive online interactions, ethical behaviour and healthy gaming habits.”

“The focus is not simply on winning, but on participating with integrity, resilience and respect for others.”

Congratulations to all students, teams and schools who participated in this year's BCE Esports Competition.

The winning primary and secondary teams will earn a place at the Queensland FUSE Cup State Finals in November, with the opportunity to progress to the National Finals at the FUSE Esports Festival on the Gold Coast.
