Mt Maria College English classes will never be the same again!
The Year 12 students at the Mitchelton College have been using virtual reality to explore their favourite literary work—The Great Gatsby.
Mt Maria College Curriculum Leader of Languages and Literacy Kristy King said, “the integration of technology has enhanced engagement in our English classroom and opened up a whole new way of exploring literary texts”.
“The introduction of technology into English classrooms is helping our students thrive,” she said.
"Students are gaining a deeper understanding of the texts through visual representation.
“In this way, students are able to immerse themselves within the story, including exploring Jay Gatsby’s mansion and uncovering clues that help bring the literary work to life.”
Mt Maria College Year 12 General English student Zo Jamroz said, “it is so much fun to live what we have been studying”.
“We were able to apply the knowledge from the text as we navigate Jay Gatsby’s mansion,” he said.
Mt Maria College Principal Luke Reed said he was excited by the innovative use of the headsets around the College.
“Virtual reality has revolutionised our English curriculum,” he said.
“This innovative approach enhances student engagement and deepens their connection to the material.”
Beyond the classroom, students are also using virtual reality headsets to build a sense of community and connection through the Virtual Reality Club, led by Mt Maria College Librarian Chris Barker.
“The virtual reality club has rapidly gained popularity, offering students an opportunity to connect with like-minded peers across different Year levels,” said Chris Barker.
“Each Monday, an enthusiastic group of students gather to explore virtual reality technology, with more experienced members mentoring their peers.
“The club provides a sense of purpose and a welcoming space where students can let their virtual reality skills shine.”
