Clare Hogan officially steps into the role of Principal of Our Lady of Good Counsel Gatton this year bringing, with her a love for rural education where faith, community and learning flourish.

You know the school very well, what are you most looking forward to in this new role?

The opportunity to continue my commitment to strengthen the relationships among our Lockyer Valley Catholic schools, including Our Lady of Good Counsel Gatton, St Mary’s Primary School Laidley, and Sophia College Plainland. Collectively, we are dedicated to fostering and exemplifying the strengths of Catholic education within a rural context.

With Catholic education in the Lockyer Valley continuing to thrive, families are warmly invited to register for the special Open Week community event at Sophia College Plainland to discover the diverse and connected Catholic education pathways available in the region.

What are your hobbies or interests outside of work and how do you share these with your students and community?

Baking brings me immense happiness. I enjoy crafting intricate birthday cakes for my children, whipping up easy treats for loved ones, and filling our home with delicious scents that everyone can appreciate. My staff has often benefited from my baking as well.

How do you like to connect with students on a personal level?

I enjoy getting involved in students' learning, celebrating their achievements—no matter how small—and making sure we have fun together. Being present in their classrooms, participating in lessons, offering guidance to early career teachers, reading stories to Prep students, dancing during music classes, or playing soccer at lunchtime all bring me joy. I believe it’s important for students to view me not only as their Principal but also as someone who genuinely cares about them as individuals.

What is your favourite way to celebrate student achievements?

A surprise “shout out” to a student who quietly inspires others, leads by example, or shows kindness—recognised unexpectedly by both staff and students.

Do you have any traditions or practices for creating a positive school environment?

It is a longstanding personal practice of mine to learn the names of all students during the first term at any school where I serve. This year, the process has posed additional challenges due to the arrival of 58 new Prep students, including three sets of twins. It is my belief that addressing students by name fosters a sense of community in which each individual is recognised, respected, and valued.

What are your plans for your school in 2026?

To ensure ongoing growth—including increases in enrolment, staff accomplishments and recognition, greater student engagement, and a parent community eager to participate in this progress.

How do you hope to be remembered by the students and staff you’ve led?

Someone who supports, learns with, believes in, enjoys time with others, is approachable, participates, shares stories, and consistently shows kindness through words and actions.

Do you have an inspiring quote or phrase you use in your interactions as a leader?

Leading and living by the Golden Rule - treat others the way you want to be treated.

What do you think makes your school and Catholic education in general special?

The dedication of our staff. The staff of OLGC are remarkable. They bring commitment, passion, and a sense of fun to everything they do, and it is their dedication that helps create the faith-filled, warm, vibrant learning environment I am so proud of.

Who or what inspired you to take on this leadership journey?

The women who have significantly influenced my life. Their varied backgrounds have shown me that anything is attainable, and they have encouraged me to confidently share my skills and talents with others whenever opportunities arise.
