04 Mar 2026 Support Teachers Inclusive Education (ST‑IEs) from across Brisbane Catholic Education recently came together for a dedicated Induction Day focused on strengthening inclusive practice and supporting access to learning for students of all abilities. The day highlighted the essential role ST‑IEs play within school communities, working in collaboration with students, parents and carers, teachers and Student Support Teams to remove barriers and ensure meaningful participation in learning. BCE Senior Manager - Student Diversity and Wellbeing, Dionne Lloyd, said ST‑IEs are central to ensuring students with disability can access the curriculum on the same basis as their peers. “Being a Support Teacher Inclusive Education is a calling,” Dionne said. “It is about ensuring students of all abilities and backgrounds can engage fully in learning and school life, in genuine partnership with families.” She said ST‑IEs approach their work through a strong lens of inclusion, supporting teachers to implement evidence‑based strategies that maximise engagement and promote student wellbeing. “Our focus is on adapting the learning environment rather than expecting students to change,” Dionne said. “Each student brings their own strengths and individuality, and our role is to create classroom conditions that recognise and support that diversity.” ST‑IEs operate within a multi‑tiered system of support, working alongside teachers to problem solve, develop individual learning plans and implement appropriate adjustments. These may include changes to physical spaces, learning approaches or sensory supports. In the early years, this work helps establish strong foundations for students starting school, while in later years it supports successful transitions into secondary education. “An important part of the role is listening closely to families and supporting them to understand the system and confidently advocate for their children,” Dionne said. This role offers the unique reward of making a tangible difference in students’ lives every day by removing barriers and creating learning environments where every child can thrive. “For educators who are passionate about inclusion and want to create lasting, meaningful change across school communities, the Support Teacher Inclusive Education role is a powerful opportunity to do work that truly matters.” View all news
