Whether he's analysing data, supporting students and colleagues, introducing new technologies or even helping bring school productions to life, Southern Cross Catholic College (Scarborough) Curriculum Leader - Mathematics Anthony Young, is constantly looking for ways to make a difference.

His contribution was recently recognised at Brisbane Catholic Education's Excellence Awards (Friday 14 August), where he received the Excellence in Learning and Teaching in Secondary Award.

For Anthony, the recognition came as a surprise.

"I'm appreciative that the small things that I feel I do make such a difference for my staff and students."

At the heart of his work is a commitment to ensuring every student can flourish.

Using NAPLAN, Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT) and internal assessment data, he works alongside staff to identify trends, target support where it is needed most and develop strategies that build both student achievement and confidence in mathematics.

Through Maths Help and Maths Extension programs, he has created opportunities for students to receive additional support, tackle new challenges and develop test-taking confidence.

"Many of the students have decided to attend every week because they appreciate being able to get immediate help when they need it," he said.

He believes confidence grows when students understand there is more than one pathway to success.

"Maths can often be daunting for students, as they can feel like it has to be done a certain way,” he said.

"I strive to show students that maths always has more than one way to achieve a goal, and it doesn't matter which way works, do the one that works for you."

Recognising the importance of balancing digital and traditional learning, Anthony has led the development and sharing of practical resources while helping colleagues integrate new technologies and tools.

“I support them as a curriculum expert, ensuring that plans are up to date, detailed and reviewed regularly, as well as helping with pedagogy where staff need guidance on alternate ways to engage students,” he said.

"I believe in servant leadership. The more I can do for my staff to allow them to focus on good teaching, the better for my department.”

Yet some of his most valuable contributions occur away from the Mathematics classroom.

Working with colleagues and learning from solutions implemented in other schools, Anthony developed the College's pastoral care app, Lighthouse.

"We needed to support staff in making behaviour support referrals, affirmations and phone confiscations as seamless as possible," he said.

From theatre productions and musicals to major College presentations, Anthony also oversees lighting and sound, helping to create memorable experiences for students.

Southern Cross Catholic College Principal Chris Campbell said Anthony's impact can be felt across the College community.

"Anthony has made a significant contribution to our College through his data-informed approach to teaching and learning, his commitment to providing additional support for students, and his genuine care for those around him,” Chris said.

"His collaborative approach, deep understanding of students' academic needs and respectful interactions with colleagues, students and families have had a lasting impact on our learning culture.”

While his work spans many areas of College life, Anthony says it is the people who make Southern Cross Catholic College special.

"The staff at Southern Cross are fantastic. They are warm and supportive, care about the students immensely and are always looking out for each other."

About Queensland World Teachers’ Day
Queensland World Teachers' Day is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and applaud our teachers for the important role they play in our communities and for the positive impact they have on the lives of students. This year’s Queensland theme is teachers change lives.

This year’s BCE theme is a message directly from our students ‘Thank you for believing in us,’ and throughout October, our school communities are invited to share messages of gratitude.

If you would like to thank a staff member at a BCE school, share your appreciation on your school’s Gratitude Wall, take a photo and tag BCE on social media using #ThanksBCEStaff and #WTDQLD
