Want to know what it's like to teach in a Catholic school?

Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) seeks to engage the best teachers to educate, inspire and support the young people in our 146 schools.  For pre-service teachers considering a career with BCE, we provide a pre-service information session aimed at demystifying what it's like to teach in a Catholic school.

Who should attend?

This information session is designed for pre-service teachers who are in their final year of study and interested in teaching in a Catholic school.

What's it all about?

In this session, you will gain valuable insights about BCE's accreditation program for teachers, the benefits of working with BCE and the recruitment process. In particular we cover:
  • the Archdiocese of Brisbane's approach to religious education in all schools and colleges,
  • an introduction to BCE's Religious Education (RE) Curriculum and the extensive professional learning programs that BCE provides to new teachers, and
  • benefits of working with BCE and how to apply.

Are there any pre-requisites?

To teach in a BCE school, you are not required to have prior training in teaching religious education before you are appointed to a role. A new teaching employee is given an accreditation status to teach in a Catholic school and if the teaching of Religion is required, an interim status to teach Religion is also applied.  Professional learning in Religious Education is provided through a range of courses after joining BCE to assist in gaining and maintaining full accreditation if you are:
  • teaching Religion in a primary school; or
  • a secondary teacher teaching subjects containing Religious Education e.g. P-12  Religious Education Curriculum, Religion and Ethics, Study of Religion.

Do I have to be Catholic to attend this session?

All pre-service teachers in their final year are welcome to attend this session.

In BCE, being Catholic is regarded as a genuine occupational requirement for teachers of religion as noted within the Anti-Discrimination Act, Qld, 1991 and only Catholic teachers will be considered for roles involving the teaching of religion.  For example:

  • All full-time primary classroom teachers teaching religion (excludes specialist teachers e.g. Music)
  • All secondary teachers teach subjects containing Religious Education e.g. Religious Education, Religion and Ethics and Study of Religion.

Teachers of other subjects in secondary schools e.g. Maths, Science, English are not required to be Catholic. However, all teachers are required to demonstrate a commitment to the values and ethos of Catholic Education and we encourage all teachers to learn about Religious Education through this information session.

Do I have to be an ACU student to attend this session?

No, pre-service teachers studying at all universities are welcome to join us and learn more!
