Every day across the Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) community, there are incredible individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference—those who embody our Catholic values, uplift others and create lasting change.

If you know someone in your school or community like this, nominate them for a Spirit of Catholic Education Award.

What defines an outstanding nomination?

In 2024, the Principal and leadership team - Nick Fogarty, Nicole Saunders, Amy Glisson, Shinara Auld, and Samantha Donoghue - from St William’s Primary School, Grovely were nominated for championing student voice and improving school culture.

By listening to students and responding to their needs, the leadership team introduced before school and lunchtime activities, which resulted in increased student motivation, improved student behaviour, and supported students in starting their day with a positive mindset.

Students were also given a say in other aspects of school life, from Wellbeing Week activities and Spellathon prizes to playground equipment orders.

Through a deep belief in shared ownership and collective responsibility, Principal Nick Fogarty said the team empowered their students to take an active role in their learning and school life.

“This approach has led to improved attendance, student results, and outcomes, demonstrating the powerful impact Student Voice has on lifelong learning and success,” he said.

“Student involvement has also strengthened the school’s culture, with feedback from BCE surveys from parents and staff reinforcing that students feel heard, valued, and excited to contribute.”

About the Spirit of Catholic Education Awards

The Spirit of Catholic Education Awards are presented annually in conjunction with Catholic Education Week (CEW) (27 July to 2 Aug 2025) to celebrate outstanding contributions to Catholic education in Queensland.

Each year, nominations are received from Catholic school communities across the State, highlighting the important work being undertaken by staff, parents, carers, and volunteers who support Catholic school students.

Nominees, including teams, are recognised across a number of categories for excellence in their work, leadership, service, initiative, and creating positive change for Indigenous students.

The awards are supported by UniSuper (US) and the Australian Catholic University (ACU), the sponsors of CEW.
