Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) Primary Schools’ Rugby 7s Tournaments are back and charging down the field across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and the Gold Coast in 2025.
Among the highlights, the Gold Coast Rugby 7s competition is returning for its second year, ready to boot expectations even higher.
BCE School Operations and Programs Lead Greg Casey said the tournament, beginning this term, was an opportunity for students from across BCE’s 146 schools to showcase their “teamwork and skills”.
“This year’s competition promises to raise the bar, with more teams, speed, and show-stopping moments that will have spectators and parents on their feet,” he said.
“We were thrilled with the turnout last year across our four main regions – Brisbane North, South and West and the Sunshine Coast, and we’re ready and raring to bring the competition back to the Gold Coast for a second year.
“The event continues its strong partnership with Queensland Rugby Union (QRU) for another year, and this partnership helps to provide a fun community day for our students, parents and staff.
“As part of the competition, QRU provides qualified coaches, referees, and first aid officers.
“With the help of QRU, and the staff from our schools who act as coaches and managers, students learn about the skills of the game, encouraging participation in sport while also having fun.”
Greg adds the competition is seeing record female participation.
“We’re seeing more female students than ever taking part,” he said.
“Our female students can participate in touch rugby from the age of 10, while 12-year-old girls have the opportunity to play full-contact Rugby 7s.
“This tournament is a great introduction for our students to an Olympic sport in which Australia has fared well over the last two games.
“From this competition, some of our students could get the spark that takes them on to represent Australia at the 2032 Olympics.”
Notre Dame College, Bells Creek Principal and Sunshine Coast Rugby 7’s Co-ordinator Dan McShea said he was excited for the students from our Sunshine Coast Catholic schools to participate in what is a “high quality and fun rugby competition for the third year running”.
“This carnival focuses on participation in sport in a safe environment,” he said.
“Supported by QRU, it promotes fitness, teamwork, competition, and camaraderie, offering our students a chance to enjoy healthy competition among our system of schools.”
Dan adds “for many students, the greatest memories and friendships from school come through sport”.
“We want to provide as many opportunities as possible for our students to participate in quality events like this,” he said.
“Many students who have never played rugby, have greatly benefitted from this program.”
Greg said BCE would like to thank QRU for their support again in 2025.
“I would also like to thank our five regional co-ordinators for their efforts in the organisation of these events.
“They give their time freely so that our students can reap the benefits of a great community event.”
The BCE Rugby 7s Tournaments will kick off in Brisbane West on Wednesday 14 May, with competitions also held on the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday 28 May, Gold Coast on Wednesday 11 June, Brisbane North Tuesday 17 June, and Brisbane South Wednesday 25 June.
