At Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE), we aim to develop active learners who are engaged in their own learning and are encouraged to share their voice.

As part of our ongoing improvement process, we ask our students, teachers, and parents to participate in the Tell Them From Me survey each year.

Open from 6 May to 30 May 2025, the survey provides important information about how we can better engage our students in their learning.

BCE Head of Student Learning and Wellbeing, Marisa Dann said data from the survey helped to develop a holistic understanding of student wellbeing and engagement across our schools.

“The survey is one way we support students to use their voice effectively to ensure our school communities are safe environments where our students and staff can thrive,” Marisa said.

“The survey also points to opportunities schools can take to support students to engage with their learning - ultimately helping to improve their learning outcomes.”

As BCE evolves and embeds the ‘Living Learning’ pedagogical model of teaching practice across the system, insights from the survey will further inform the bespoke model co-designed by the University of Queensland.

BCE Senior Manager – Student Learning and Wellbeing, Brent Johnston said the science of learning model supports student engagement by applying evidence-based strategies to enhance how students learn and interact with their school environment.

“This multidisciplinary approach draws on neuroscience, psychology, and education research to create optimal learning conditions for our students based on positive relationships and connection,” Brent said.

“By understanding individual cognitive processes, teachers can tailor lessons to suit how students learn best, individually and collectively, making education more relevant and engaging for our students.”

Senior Lecturer at the UQ School of Education and Program Director at the UQ Learning Lab, Dr Stephanie MacMahon said one of the overarching principles of the science of learning is that when students understand how they learn, they can improve the way they learn.

“From a student perspective this is so important because it really places the emphasis on ‘learning’ and focuses on ‘what is learning’,” Dr MacMahon said.
“It gives students a shared language to engage with teachers about strategies that might help to improve learning and to identify any barriers to learning,” she said.

About the Tell Them From Me Survey

The Tell Them From Me survey is open from 6 May to 30 May 2025. Our students from years 4 – 12, parents and carers, and teaching staff, are encouraged to share their voice.

Your feedback is invaluable in creating a supportive and thriving educational environment for all our staff and students. The survey is used to capture student, parent, and teacher voices, providing reliable evidence for schools to use in identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
