The College’s mission to harness the power of Science, Ecology, and Technology (SET) is woven into daily College life, shaping a generation of environmentally conscious learners.
Sophia College Plainland Curriculum Leader for Technologies, Sam Langatuki said students were encouraged to explore how their choices and innovations contribute to a resilient, sustainable future - not just in theory, but through hands-on experiences.
“Ecology is embedded into our existing SET subjects, exploring local environmental challenges and solutions,” Sam said.
“This not only makes our curriculum relevant for our students, but it helps them to develop the knowledge and skills they need to create sustainable change.”
At the heart of this commitment is the College’s purpose-built eco-science precinct, where students engage with hands-on learning to drive meaningful ecological and technological innovation.
“This precinct is a thriving space of learning that provides a springboard for the integration of ecology across the College’s curriculum,” Sam said.
Guided by the principles of Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and the example of St Francis, the College promotes a deep awareness of the interconnectedness between people, ecosystems and technology.
Sophia College Principal Narelle Dobson said this meant that SET was more than academic at Sophia College, it was a way of thinking.
“We want our students to graduate not just with knowledge, but with the mindset and ethical grounding to lead change—locally and globally,” Narelle said.
“Our commitment to SET, combined with the methodologies of Design Thinking and System Thinking, drives us to create solutions that are not only technologically advanced but also ecologically sound and socially responsible.”
Integral ecology extends beyond classroom through the “Flourish” wellbeing program and co-curricular projects where students actively contribute to sustainability efforts encouraging them to act on the call to care for God’s creation, our common home.
“STEM education is crucial for preparing students for a future where technology and innovation are constantly evolving, and it equips them with valuable skills for various careers and aspects of life.”
“At Sophia College, science, sustainability, and spirituality align to empower students to become active participants in shaping a better world.”
