As part of the second cohort in the BCE Education Strategy Pilot program, the school aims to use the project to mature its assessment and reporting processes through progressive reporting, ensuring students receive timely and meaningful feedback.
The Learning Dashboard is a portal that facilitates student academic reporting at BCE, with a range of functionality available that provides greater levels of agency and personalisation for students.
Enhancing assessment practices
The school's Impact Lead Educator, St Joseph’s School Teacher, Bianca Brugioni said the project aligned with their Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA) which focused on designing quality assessments.
“Implementing progressive reporting will improve our communication with parents and hopefully boost engagement, which we know is key to supporting our students,” Bianca said.
“By supplementing traditional mid, and end of semester reporting with ongoing updates, parents gain deeper insights into student progress, fostering engagement and collaboration.”
During the implementation phase of the project, teachers are supported in building confidence and capacity in assessment design while streamlining communication channels with parents.
“The project team will work with the entire teaching staff to design and embed the ‘St Joseph’s way’ - all while maintaining manageable workloads.”
The role of The Learning Dashboard in student-centred learning
A key priority of the project is ensuring the effective and efficient use of The Learning Dashboard, including a student-centred space that captures insights by the student for the student.
Senior Project Officer - Progressive Reporting & Online Learning, David Gall, said Learner Profiles in the Dashboard allow families a ‘window into the classroom’ between students, teachers, and families.
“Student independence and choice are key considerations in the research project, giving students greater control over how they demonstrate their learning and growth,” David said.
“A Learner Profile in the Dashboard enables students to take ownership of their learning content and actively engage with their academic journey,” David said.
A shift towards progressive reporting
St Joseph’s Primary School Principal Velma Erskine said the implementation of The Learning Dashboard will become an integral part of the school’s workflow.
“This transformation involves refining the cadence, frequency, and type of content shared with parents, ensuring that feedback is both timely and constructive,” Velma said.
“While only in its early stages, we are already seeing an eagerness in our teaching staff to get involved and better understand the tools available to thrive in a dynamic and evolving educational landscape.”
Next steps in the project
The next phase of the project involves surveying parents to gather insights into their experience with progressive reporting.
“This feedback will be instrumental in refining the processes and content shared to ensure it meets the needs of students, parents, and teachers alike,” Bianca said.
About the BCE Education Strategy Pilots Program
The Innovative Schools for Impact Program was established to support the overall goal of BCE’s 2024-2027 Education Strategy, to deliver transformational experiences that inspire joy for learning, where excellence and equity enable all to grow and thrive.
The structured professional learning program aims to improve school and student outcomes by delivering research results that can be translated across the system while providing communities of practice for schools to network and support each other through the process.
