St Francis Xavier School, Runaway Bay, welcomed more than 900 students and guests onto its campus to mark its golden anniversary on Friday, 6 June.

The day began with a whole-school Mass, honouring the faith-filled foundations of the school, before guests stepped into a vibrant celebration that brought its proud history to life.

St Francis Xavier School Principal Ronan O’Mahony said, “as part of the celebration, students embraced the theme of ‘school through the ages,’ playing classic games from the 1970s and imagining what schools of the future might look like”.

“Visitors also enjoyed memorabilia display in the library, showcasing treasured moments from our school’s history,” he said.

“Our teachers also surprised students with a flash mob, dancing their way through decades of hits, including YMCA and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

Ronan adds, “the 50th anniversary celebrations honoured the school’s rich history while bringing the community together in meaningful ways”.

“Every moment paid tribute to the legacy of Saint Francis Xavier, capturing how far the school has come,” he said.

“In 1975, we opened our doors to just 69 students, and today our school community boasts over 700 students—a testament to five decades of growth, dedication, and the enduring spirit of St Francis Xavier.”

St Francis Xavier School secretary Jess Garland and mother of three, Oliver (2019 graduate), Ivy (2021 graduate), and Archie Year 4 said St Francis Xavier had always held a special place in her family’s heart.

“Our connection began back in 1985 when my brothers and I were students here,” she said.

“My mum worked in the school office, and my parents were actively involved in the Parents and Friends Association.

“Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to work here and watch my children grow up surrounded by the same sense of community and belonging I had.

“Returning to work at St Francis Xavier after raising my three children felt like coming home.

“This community has shaped who I am, supported my family through many seasons, and gifted us with memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

The celebrations continued into Saturday afternoon with an offsite gathering at Sanctuary Cove, where more than 160 past and present staff, parents, and students came together for an afternoon of connection and reflection.
