St James Primary School, Coorparoo is making a statement this Under Eights Week (19 to 23 May)—play isn’t just fun it’s essential to learning.

This year, the Coorparoo school welcomes future students (Thursday, 22 May), including local kindergarten children, younger siblings, and Pre-Prep students, to their campus to celebrate early childhood.

St James Primary School Principal Rachelle Gibson said we strive to make learning enjoyable and memorable for students.

“Through the construction of building blocks, sandcastle building, treasure hunts, and ball games, students are developing skills in problem-solving, collaboration, and creativity,” she said.

“These are not just games—they are opportunities to build skills required for learning at school, such as problem solving and making friends.

“We know children learn best when they are playing, and our school’s Under Eights Week event reflects our broader beliefs that learning should be fun.”

Rachelle adds, “The Under Eights Week is at the heart of what we do – making learning fun and can be found anywhere at any time”.

“In 2023, we launched our school’s Pre-Prep program, designed to give our future students and their families regular opportunities to engage with our school environment and community,” she said.

“Our Pre-Prep program begins in Term 3 and goes right through until Term 4, with students ready to confidently start the school year in January.

“As part of our program, students learn how to confidently explore their new school, meet their future teachers, discover where the classrooms and playgrounds are, and begin to build a strong sense of familiarity.

“Our Under Eights Week is part of our successful Pre-Prep program, supporting students to build familiarity with our school before we even begin the transition to school.”

Rachelle said, “Our senior students also play an active role in designing and leading our school’s Under Eights Week celebrations”.

“It’s an opportunity for our senior students to practice the leadership skills they have already developed throughout the year,” she said.
