At Holy Cross School Wooloowin, classrooms are not just places for lessons—they are places where young minds are nurtured, and futures shaped with care, creativity, and community.
At the forefront of this transformative approach are educators Kerrie McEwan and Leisa Devereaux.
This World Teachers' Day (Friday, 25 October), their dedication to creating inclusive, supportive, and dynamic learning environments is a perfect reminder of the profound role teachers play in shaping young lives.
In this spirit, Year 4 teacher Kerrie, who has taught at Holy Cross School for 10 years, said her favourite part of being an educator was providing support to her students that go beyond academics.
“As an educator in a Catholic school, I truly value the pastoral and social justice aspects of our work, particularly the awareness we foster in our children through outreach programs,” she said.
“Every year, our students can participate in initiatives like Mini Vinnies and Project Compassion, reflecting our school’s holistic approach to education.
“Initiatives like these foster social awareness and compassion for those in need among our learners.
“I come to work every day knowing I am helping to build global citizens who give back to their communities and it’s truly a privilege."
Year 2 teacher Leisa, who has worked at Holy Cross School for over 12 years, also echoes this sentiment.
“As a former Brisbane Catholic Education student, I know how impactful a school community can be on children,” she said.
“I am committed to providing my students with the same inclusive and caring experience I received at St Flannan’s School Zillmere.
“What makes Holy Cross Wooloowin truly stand out is its strong sense of community and unwavering commitment to fostering inclusivity.
“The size of our school means every student is known by name, and each teacher understands their unique needs, creating a personalised learning environment where students thrive.
“For parents looking for a school where their child will be known, loved, and given every opportunity to flourish, Holy Cross offers the perfect start.”
Holy Cross School Principal Simon Mahaffy said, “Kerrie and Leisa’s ability to make learning fun and exciting for our students is truly remarkable”.
“They transform activities, from designing boats for a regatta competition to building matchbox bridges, they make learning feel like play,” he said.
“Their classrooms radiate curiosity and joy.
“Together with our school’s values, their dedication creates a nurturing foundation that prepares students not just for secondary school but for life.”
