Leigh Mirto believes in the power of connection and is committed to grading success by celebrating achievements and supporting every student's educational journey.
As the new Principal of St Kevin’s School Benowa, Leigh brings a wealth of leadership experience and a passion for education.
He is focused on creating a positive and inclusive environment where both students and staff can grow and thrive.
Q: What inspires you in your role as Principal?
A:
What inspires me most is the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of students and the school community. Seeing students grow, learn, and achieve their potential is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, working with dedicated teachers and staff who are passionate about education and committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment is truly motivating.
Q: How do you like to connect with your students?
A:
I love connecting with students by getting involved in their activities and showing genuine interest in their lives. One of my favourite ways to do this is by joining in on handball games during recess or lunch. It's a great way to break the ice and have some fun together. I also enjoy walking with students around the school grounds, which provides a relaxed setting to chat and get to know them better. Making time for conversations where I can learn about their hopes, dreams, and aspirations is incredibly important to me. These moments help build trust and show students that I care about their individual journeys.
Q: What is your favourite way to celebrate student achievements?
A:
My favourite way to celebrate student achievements is by organising assemblies where their hard work is recognised publicly. Seeing their pride and hearing the applause from the school community is truly rewarding.
Q: How will you foster a strong community in your new role?
A:
This is a top priority for me. I plan to achieve this by creating a school culture which champions, open communication, inclusive activities, student involvement, supportive learning environment, and community partnerships.
Q: Do you have any traditions or practices for creating a positive school environment?
A:
I believe starting the day with a morning assembly sets a positive tone for the entire school. During these assemblies, we share uplifting news, celebrate student achievements, and discuss important values and goals for the day. It's a great way to build a sense of community and ensure everyone begins their day on a positive note.
Implementing Positive Behaviour for Learning is a cornerstone of our approach to fostering a positive school environment. This initiative focuses on promoting positive behaviour through clear expectations, consistent reinforcement, and supportive interventions. By teaching and encouraging positive behaviours, we create a safe and inclusive environment where all students can thrive.
Q: What are your plans for your school in 2025?
A:
In 2025, I plan to continue building on the work we have already begun. My focus will be on increasing student performance and ability through enhanced academic rigor, while ensuring that wellbeing remains at the heart of all our decisions.
Q:
How do you hope to be remembered by the students and staff you’ve led?
A:
I hope to be remembered as a Principal who embodies integrity and practiced purposeful, intentional leadership. I want to be seen as someone who made decisions with the best interests of everyone at heart, always striving to create a positive and supportive environment. Additionally, I hope to be remembered for bringing a sense of fun and joy to our school, making learning and working here an enjoyable experience for all.
Q: Do you have an inspiring quote or phrase you like to use at school?
A:
The best way to predict the future is to create it.
Q: What do you think makes your school special?
A:
The rich tapestry of traditions and values we uphold. Our school fosters a sense of community and belonging among students and staff. Additionally, the loving and caring approach of our staff ensures that every student feels valued and supported. This combination of faith, tradition, and compassion truly sets our school apart.
Q: Who or what inspired you to undertake this leadership journey?
A:
The principals I worked with inspired my leadership journey through their dedication, vision, and genuine care for students and staff. Their example of leading with integrity and purpose motivated me to strive for excellence and make a meaningful difference.
