NINE schools and 60 teams laced up their footy boots today (Friday 24 October), going head-to-head at Brisbane Catholic Education’s (BCE) inaugural Touch Rugby League Carnival.

With students involved across four categories, under 10s and under 12s boys and girls, the carnival showcased a mixture of emerging BCE talent!

St Columba’s Primary School Principal Nick Fogarty said the event was a first of its kind for BCE students.

“We wanted to find a way to continue the success of our Term 2 and 3 Rugby 7’s Carnival, while also encouraging students to learn new skills,” he said.

“Touch Rugby League is not only an opportunity to play a different sport, but also an opportunity for students to learn new skills, like kicking a ball.

“Here at BCE, we are lifelong learners, and we believe it is important that students are challenged to try new sports.

“Trying new sports allows students to develop life skills like resilience and teamwork as they work toward a common goal with their peers.”

When speaking about the Touch Rugby League Carnival, Nick adds, “the benefits are obvious”.

“It’s non-contact rugby league, which means more students can participate,” he said.

“There’s an emphasis on hand-eye coordination, while students also get the added benefits of getting active and giving it their best on the field.”

Nick said, “with parents busier than ever, it’s important students are provided quality sporting opportunities in school hours”.

“The Carnival is another way BCE continues to support families to keep children active, and encourage children in building lifelong healthy habits,” he said.

“I would like to thank Mt Maria College, Mitchelton for hosting this year’s carnival.”
