Every student at St Ann’s School Redbank Plains has their own PAL.

Taking students and staff on a fun-filled journey of growth and improvement, the school’s innovative introduction of Support Teachers – Pedagogy and Learning (PALs) has been a huge success. So much so, that every class at the school will have a PAL in 2025.

These qualified teachers play a crucial role in the educational ecosystem at St Ann’s School, enabling classroom teachers to focus on teaching while providing differentiated learning support tailored to student needs.

Principal Sonny Smith said the introduction of PALs for every year level will ensure students enjoy consistency and continuity as their PALs progress alongside them through the Year levels.

“Not only do the PALs provide differentiated learning support for our students, but their role is also vital in providing our teachers the freedom to shine in what they do best—teaching,” he said.

“The PAL role also offers a compelling pathway to school leadership for those educators looking for the next step in their career.

“Becoming a PAL is a great way to learn how to build capacity within a team, skills needed in school leadership and Principalship.”

One of St Ann’s School’s first PALs, Siobhan Molloy, said being able to stay with students as they journey through school was a real advantage.

“Within the PAL role we have unique insights on student’s individual strengths and needs,” she said.

“This continuity allows us to provide tailored support throughout a student’s education, making it easier for their teacher to understand and enhance their learning journey.”

St Ann’s School Year 3 PAL Karen Oudyn said taking on responsibilities and guiding her peers has significantly boosted her self-confidence and communication skills this year.

“This role has refined my leadership style, teaching me the importance of leading with patience, inclusivity, and encouragement,” she said.

“Seeing the impact of supporting others in their learning journey has reaffirmed my passion for education and motivates me to continually grow as an educator and leader.”

St Ann’s School Prep PAL Kate Seaton said, “the St Ann’s leadership team have been incredibly supportive in helping develop my knowledge and skills, encouraging me to view myself as a leader.”

“Their support has boosted my confidence in my abilities, allowing me to leverage my knowledge to assist others effectively,” she said.

“Through this role I’ve deepened my understanding of the Australian Curriculum and gained insights into effective curriculum implementation and best practices across the cohort.”

St Ann’s newest PAL Rylee Stella said, “the PAL role is an invaluable opportunity for professional growth.”

Sonny said, “as St Ann’s School Redbank Plains continues to grow, the emphasis on empowering teachers through dedicated support roles not only enriches the educational environment but also paves the way for a new generation of leaders in education.”
